New WIP: Great Horned Owl

While off from work today - hunkering down inside riding out "Frankenstorm" - I started work on an entry for the Randy Higbee Gallery's 6" Squared Exhibition & Sale. As you probably figured out, this piece is 6x6. I was working quickly today racing the storm to lay down an underpainting before the power went out. I used acrylics thinned with water to loosely lay down some colors. I will finish this piece off in oils but plan on leaving some of the drips and spatters alone as I think they look cool.

Coyote Painting

I apologize that I did not post any work in progress photos of this one - it went pretty quickly once I got into it. I actually started this little painting of a coyote last year in a Greg Beecham workshop as my class project. I wanted to watch Greg paint, so I did not get much further than the underpainting stage. Recently, I began working on it again because I was awaiting a shipment of painting panels. I had nothing planned out to work on until they arrived, so I started playing around with this one again. Finished it up yesterday. Per a friend's suggestion, I'm calling this one "Snow Patrol". Hope you like it.

I was also happy to learn that Fired Up received an award for Best Head Portrait at the American Academy of Equine Art Fall Open Juried Exhibition. The show was on display at the Scott County Arts & Cultural Center in Georgetown, KY. The recognition for this painting was nice because this is the first time one of my oil paintings have received an award. It's encouragement to push on with the oils!
