Terns Finished?

I hope everyone had a nice holiday! Mine was nice...I spent it with loved ones, ate lots of yummy food, had some good belly laughs, and I had time to paint. I think that the terns are finished. I'm going to let it sit on my easel for a few days and decide if it needs any further tweaking. What does everyone think about the underpainting peeking through? I personally like it...but do you think too much is showing? Please tell me your thoughts. By the way, I'm calling this piece "Backoff!"

Une scène tout en mouvement... j'aime cette peinture achevée...
C'est la juste et dure loi de la nature que vous avez capturé à merveille...
Gros bisous à vous et tous mes voeux pour 2012.

Looks great - I like the underpainting showing, it harmonises with the orange of the birds' feet as well as adding a bit of interest to the background without detracting from the movement of the interaction between the birds. Lucky you getting the chance to paint over the holiday - I don't seem to have escaped the kitchen! Have a happy New Year!

Martine: Thank you, glad you like it. Best wishes to you as well for 2012!

Caroline: Thanks! It was not my original intention to let so much of the underpainting show through, but I found I liked it. I agree that it adds a bit of interest to the negative space.

I like your underpainting peeking through very much. Although this painting has a lot of movement in it already, the background adds even more interest.

I'm always curious to see how other artists handle their backgrounds in my quest to avoid boring, static ones in my own paintings. Thanks for inspiring me!

Gabrielle: Thank you for the feedback. It's so nice to hear that many seem to like the underpainting showing through. Hopefully non-artists will like it as well!
