Southern Ground Hornbill featured in "Watercolor Artist" magazine

Today I received my complimentary copies of the February 2011 issue of "Watercolor Artist" magazine featuring my painting Southern Ground Hornbill. I won an Honorable Mention in their Watermedia Showcase Competition. There were more than 900 entries. I was honored and surprised to have been selected as a finalist.

WIP: Harris Hawk Update

I made a little more progress on the Harris Hawk this week. Since the last post, I started work on the folded wing, applied darker glazes to the breast area, and I finished the upright wing.

New WIP: Harris Hawk

I apologize for not posting in awhile. Last month was the Waterfowl Festival and I took a little break from painting after I finished up work for it. Then, I returned home with a nasty cold and that hindered my desire to paint. November was pretty much a wash for getting any artwork done. So, I'm feeling much better now and I'm back at it!

On the easel currently is a 36 x 24 oil painting of a Harris Hawk. I photographed this Harris Hawk at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum during their Raptor Free Flight program. This hawk has just landed on an old snag and is balancing itself. I don't have the luxury of a large studio space or large easel so it's been a challenge painting this one on my little table easel! I've been working on it turned on its side.

Here's a detail shot:

And here's the entire painting:
