More Progress on the Screech Owl

A little more progress on the screech owl. More details were added on the owl's facial feathers, his eyes, and beak. The head is finished at this point. I'm starting to fill in the background now with the pine branches he's nestled in.

Latest Progress - Screech Owl Commission

Work continues on the screech owl. I picked up a nasty cold earlier this week, making me feel miserable; so I'm not as far along as I'd like to be. I'm hoping to get alot done during this holiday weekend. I have started to loosely add the pine needles and I've been building up layers of color and details on the owl.

WIP - Screech Owl Commission

Here is the progress so far on my second owl commission. This one is of a red phase eastern screech owl in a pine. Like the first one - High Roost, this one measures 7x5 inches and is being painted in acrylics. Right now, it's just in the blocking-in phase, not alot of detail yet with the exception of the eyes. They are almost near completion. I gravitate to the eyes first on most paintings, but especially so with these portrait type pieces. When I am painting an up-close intimate view of a bird or animal it's critical for me to get the eyes right before I can move on in the piece. So much of what these pieces are about are capturing the subject's soul, personality, and spirit through their eyes.

Good News - Work to be Included in Major Exhibition

Yesterday, I received jury results from the Society of Animal Artists' Annual Exhibition and from Birds in Art - 2 biggies in the animal art world. I got the "big" envelope from the SAA but sadly not from Birds in Art. The competition is tough in both of these major shows. I am delighted and proud though that I was able to get into one! My grizzly cub painting Bear Clawin' was chosen for the 49th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists, to be displayed from September 5 through November 1, 2009 at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina, KS.
